Experience the Iditarod in Anchorage
Known as the "Last Great Race on Earth®," the Iditarod is an annual Alaska tradition that can't be missed. Mushers and their dog teams battle freezing temperatures, high winds, desolate tundra, jagged mountains, frozen rivers and more as they race 1,000 miles along the historic Iditarod Trail from Anchorage to Nome.
First used in the 19th century as a route to deliver mail, supplies and gold, the Iditarod Trail was of significant importance in 1925 when mushers and sled dogs ran the trail to transport medicinal serum from Anchorage to Nome. Eventually, sled dogs were replaced by modern vehicles. To preserve the sled dog culture, the Iditarod Race was created.
Join us and take part in this great tribute to Alaska's rich history and celebration of the sled dog.
